Social Communication

Social Communication Classes are designed for students with average to above-average intelligence who are struggling socially.  Students may have a diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome, High Functioning Autism, ADD/ADHD or social anxiety and are typically enrolled in general education with RSP support or SDC classes.  The curriculum for the course is based on Michelle Garcia Winner’s “Think Social!” curriculum and includes evidence based practices such as the use of video-modeling and roleplays.
The classes teach students social thinking concepts and vocabulary and also address emotional regulation and executive functioning skills.  Speech pathologists often collaborate with the social communication teacher.
Before a student is enrolled in the class the school psychologist and speech pathologist conduct an informal screening to ensure the student is appropriate.
