What is an Occupational Therapist?

School-based Occupational Therapists (OT) are licensed and board certified specialists who help students to fully access and be successful in the learning environment by supporting an individual’s engagement and participation in their occupation as a student. The areas addressed by an OT in the educational environment can include the following:

  • Environmental and/or classroom modifications
  • Functional mobility to navigate the school environment
  • Gross motor skills
  • Fine motor skills
  • Visual perceptual skills
  • Life skills
  • Self-help skills
  • Sensory Processing

What is the service model for school-based occupational therapy?

Occupational Therapy services include any combination of direct (individual, classroom group, small group or push in or pull out) and indirect services (consultation, observation, staff training, program development, adaptations and modifications) using a collaborative team approach.
